Hey {{first_name}} ,

Leo Coates built Clinch Coffee on one simple belief. Every cup should do good on your doorstep.

Not in a rainforest you'll never see. Not on a coffee farm halfway across the world.

Right here. Right now. In your local community.

Coffee With A Cause

Leo's model is refreshingly simple. He travels to martial arts gyms across the UK, sets up a coffee pop-up during open mats, and uses the proceeds to sponsor kids who can't afford their gym fees or gear.

A £150 competition gi. A month of training. Small numbers to a business, life-changing to a kid whose family was about to pull them out.

He's seen it up close, working in specialty coffee since he was 17. Martial arts gave young people trust, discipline and somewhere to put their energy that wasn't doom scrolling. Coffee just happened to be the vehicle that paid for it.

His five year plan genuinely stopped me in my tracks. A flagship coffee shop with its own roastery, an academy teaching adolescents to source, roast and pull a proper espresso, and grappling mats built directly into the distribution facility.

Business with actual purpose behind it, not just a mission statement on the packaging.

Trees You'll Never See

I recorded the full conversation with Leo last week, and the line that stuck with me most was his take on corporate CSR.

Most greenwashing follows the same pattern. Plant some trees overseas, put it on a slide, move on. Meanwhile whatever's actually happening in your own community, the one your business operates in every single day, gets ignored entirely.

Leo's approach is the opposite. Everything stays local. The coffee itself comes from a women's cooperative in Rwanda that gives refuge and employment to women from war torn regions, properly ethical sourcing rather than a fair trade badge slapped on for the label. But the impact of the business itself happens on actual doorsteps, in actual gyms, for actual kids he's met in person.

Doing good doesn't need to be complicated or far away. It just needs to be real.
